Hoebridge Golf Centre - it's not just the golf course that is green!
PSS were asked by the management of Hoebridge Golf Centre, in Woking, Surrey, to suggest a method of reducing their CO2 footprint, by upgrading the lighting within the Clubhouse, Bar and Function Suite, and Heath Club. These areas were being lit using halogen dichroic downlights (almost 350 of them), or compact fluorescent downlights. Known to be quite inefficient, the question posed was whether they could be replaced by energy-saving products. Together with Philips Lighting, we were able to present a simple upgrade path which met their needs in full.
The 35W halogen low-voltage lamps could be replaced with the Philips MasterLED equivalent, which offered many benefits. The quality of the light is extremely high, with pleasant, modern colour, and retains the ambiance of the bar. The Function Suite has dimmers fitted, and the MasterLED works well with standard dimmers.
We selected the MasterLED 7W because it gave a light output equivalent to the 35W lamps, but at just one-fifth of the energy usage. In addition, the 45,000 hour life would remove the need for costly, frequent halogen lamp replacement.
The GU10 (mains version) was chosen, complete with new fittings, so that Hoebridge could dispense with the many transformers in the ceiling spaces, which were a potential source of failure, and could be prone to overheating.
For the Pro Shop, the 2 x 26W Compact Fluorescent Downlights were replaced with the LuxSpace luminaire. This was a direct fit replacement using LED technology, and at 19W, offered a superior light output and quality, while saving almost 60% of the energy.
“The new lights have certainly made a vast improvement in the clubhouse,” observed General Manager Mike O’Connell. “Previously we were forever replacing light bulbs and the lighting was fairly inconsistent around the building. The new lights give off a much whiter and more consistent light into every corner of the clubhouse, especially in the pro shop; it’s like Wembley Stadium in there now because it is so bright,” he continued.
In addition to the room lighting, PSS supplied and installed a number of Illuminex X-Scape Emergency Lights. These are also LED, for low maintenance and reliability and incorporate Automatic Self Test, to meet the current regulations.
PSS carried out all the replacement works, with new lamps and fittings, and ensured that the disruption to the Golf Club was minimised.
Mike O'Connell, the Manager at Hoebridge Golf Centre, said "The energy savings and reduced maintenance costs will pay for the works in no time, and the LED lighting is excellent. PSS carried out the work to budget and within the required timescale, in a professional and flexible manner, with minimal disturbance.
The lighting load was in excess of 16kW before the upgrade, but is now just 3.4kW, equating to a reduction in CO2 of over 40 tonnes per year.
Jim Smith, the Project Development Manager of Burhill Golf and Leisure Ltd said that "once the energy savings at Hoebridge have been confirmed, I will have little hesitation in recommending a similar upgrade for the other golf clubs in the group."

“We are extremely pleased with how the lights look and the improvements they have made. And with the bulbs being low energy they help to reduce our carbon footprint. This fits in perfectly with our Environmental Policy, which has already seen us build a new reservoir to help with our irrigation. Throughout 2010 and beyond we are looking forward to making a large reduction in energy costs thanks to the new lights,” Mike O’Connell concluded.
